The Final in Vienna – a success of the Jagiellonian University!

On 15 – 21 April 2011 our team took part in the final of 18th Vis Moot. We are proud to announce that the third year of our participation in the Vis Moot resulted in new successes of the Jagiellonian University. In the oral part, our team qualified to the final rounds and Julia Dyras received an individual honourable mention. What is more, as the first Polish team in the Moot’s history, we were awarded with honourable mention for the Memorandum for Respondent.

In the general rounds in Vienna we pleaded against four excellent law schools – Osgoode Hall – last year’s semifinalists, Fordham – the finalists of the prestigious Dusseldorf pre-moot, and the teams of Paris Ouest and Victoria Melbourne. This surely could have been called the “group of death”! Thus, we were even more thrilled to hear the name of Jagiellonian University at the announcement of the finalist. As the only team from Poland and the region, we qualified to the top 64 out of 255 participating universities!

In the elimination rounds we competed against the University of Munich. Both teams were showered with difficult questions from the arbitrators. Our pleaders Julia Dyras and Daniel Zatorski gave an amazing performance and so did our opponents. As the chairman of the tribunal put it, the competition between the two teams was like “fire against fire”. The members of the panel were impressed by the level of the pleading and agreed that they had to make a difficult choice between two outstanding teams which met at a too early stage of the contest. To our disappointment it was the University of Munich to go through…

However, this was not the end of the Vis Moot for the Jagiellonian University. At the awards banquet on 21st April we were to hear some great news. First, the member of our team, Julia Dyras was awarded with the honourable mention for oralist. Second, our team won the honourable mention for Memorandum for Respondent – a prestigious award given only to several law schools every year. This was an unprecedented success in the history of participation of the Polish teams in the Vis Moot!

Now it is hard to believe that the Moot is over. At the same time, we are proud of what we have achieved and of all the experience we have gained. We are looking forward to the 19th Vis Moot!

The pre-Moot in the Austrian Supreme Court

On 15th April, we participated in our last preparations before the final. We took part in the pre-Moot organised in Vienna by the Graf & Pitkowitz law firm. The members of our team had a chance to plead against the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Brooklyn Law School. The entire event was held  in the magnificent rooms of the Austrian Supreme Court…
